This one features the classic directorial stylings of Baz Luhrmann, amazingly smart kids, drug gang drama, awesome disco dance scenes, and more amazing young actors who are all super smart and talented. It is set 6 years earlier in the south Bronx in New York and tells the story of the birth of hip-hop. The Get Down, on the other hand, is quite different. (Also both the soundtrack and the score are great and are worth a listen, I’m listening to the score as I write this.) Seriously, if you haven’t yet, go watch Stranger Things, it won’t disappoint. They’re goofy and silly while also being serious and afraid. All the kids in the show have incredible talent that deserves to be showcased. But she’s not the only one who deserves mention. That girl is only 12 years old and can go from looking like a sweet little girl to like she could straight up murder someone. Don’t even get me started on Millie Bobby Brown. Oh my god, I can’t get over how incredibly talented all of these kids are. Because that’s just it, most of the cast are still kids (the oldest of the young actors are still under 25), and they are all amazing.
What I personally loved most was how incredibly talented all the kids were. Weird ageist controversy aside, Stranger Things does not disappoint. If fact, if I wanted to go out and make a movie set in 1983, I totally could, and I wasn’t even born until the late 90s. People love making movies set in the 1920s and most filmmakers these days were born long after (because I’m pretty sure there aren’t any 90-year-old filmmakers out there).
People have been so surprised and confused about how two people could so accurately have a show that is set in a time before they were even alive, but I really don’t see where the confusion is coming from.
Now, Stranger Things has been some interesting commentary about the fact that the creators of the show, The Duffer Brothers, were not even born until 1984, a year after the show is set. There’s action, adventure, sci-fi, amazing young actors, bad-ass women, and most of all, a killer 80s soundtrack. Stranger Things follows what happens in a small town in 1983 after a young boy goes missing under mysterious circumstances. If you’ve somehow missed these shows, let me give you a real quick rundown of what’s happening Both shows came out over the summer and have been gaining traction at an overwhelming rate. That’s right, today I’m talking about Stranger Things and The Get Down. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Netflix, and unless you’ve been living in a subsequent pit under that rock, you’ve probably heard about the two great shows that have come out of Netflix this summer.
